Jouvert often pronounced as Jouvey is the official kick off ritual that happens in the early morning which marks the beginning of the Carnival .It is also called as the Old Mas on the island of Trinidad and Tobago and is considered to be the masquerade with or without actual mask.. The root of Jouvert goes on with the French Plantations owners in eastern Caribbean. The essential meaning of Jouvert is “day opener” and is derived from the creolized French patois, a contraction of ‘jour’ and ‘ouvert’. It is a long history of Trinidad and Tobago.
Jouvert came up from the Canboulay festival in 1800 which was night time celebrations where the landowners dressed up and imitate the garden slaves. The Canboulay revelers use to carry torches which were light caned and this was seen as the potential risk by the authorities which were further lead to Canboulay riots. This was then banned and then the Jouvert was evolved. The history and folklore of the character and events were represented by the spectacular costumes. Moko Jumbie Bats, Bookmen, Baby Dolls, jab mollasie, devil mas all these are the traditional Carnival characters because of these you can capture the elements of the past and continue to tell the story
Jouvert as its French meaning suggests starts at early morning and continues till late hours after sunrise.
