The wait is over – Caribana weekend has finally arrived!

The very popular Toronto Caribbean Carnival, (before it used to be called as Caribana) is the Caribbean culture and tradition which held yearly in the live city Toronto, Ontario, and Canada. As it is a Caribbean Carnival, this event has been billed as North America’s largest street festival which is attended by 1.3 million visitors every year and for the final parade there is the presence of over 2 million people.

The entire fest which is one of the best and first Caribbean Carnivals along with those in New York City also held outside the Caribbean region. There has also one in Notting Hill and Boston. Apart from that, in the span of a 2-week event and has various performances, food festivals, shows and parties associated with it. It also includes boat rides.

Overview

Caribana was introduced to the Canada by the natives of Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, St. Lucia, Barbados, Grenada, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Guyana, Antigua and Dominica residing in Canada. Much of the music originated is also originated from the various Caribbean islands. It is the combination of various carnivals that take place across the Caribbean islands. While it runs for two weeks, it ends with the Grand Parade of Bands and the whole carnival week coincides with the traditional weekend of Ontario statutory holiday.

History

This carnival has originally started in the year of 1967, and it is celebrated till present, this is the gift of West Indian community residing in Canada which is a tribute to Canada’s Centennial. Talking about the last year, this was being run by a non-profit nonprofit Toronto-based organization named the Caribbean Cultural Committee (CCC). As it is from West Indian culture, the BOD is majorly of their community.

In the year 2006, this committee was into deficits, so there was major financial cutoff. Later it was claimed that it legally held the trademarks, and the money is to be fronted to put into this carnival event. However for some time, it was forced to change the name to the Scotiabank Toronto Caribbean Carnival (Caribana) Festival for the various financial help.
